Fewer El Pasoans get married, split up

From El Paso Times; There were fewer newlyweds in El Paso County last year and a slight decrease in the divorce rate than in the year before, according to the latest statistics available at the County Courthouse.

A total of 6,399 marriage licenses were granted in 2004, compared with 6,662 the year before. Divorces declined slightly to 2,940 in 2004 from 3,079 the previous year. Read full story

Human services wants Iowa Legislature to rewrite law on child custody

Quad City Times reports; Iowa's top human services official wants the Legislature to rewrite a law that makes some parents relinquish custody of their severely mentally ill children.

Kevin Concannon, director the Iowa Department of Human Services, said at a news conference Wednesday that the current system prevents some children from receiving the care they need.

Iowa is one of roughly 25 states that require parents to give up custody in order for their children to be eligible for certain government-funded health programs. Concannon said the law is remnant of outdated notions about mental health.

Drop in divorce rate is encouraging sign

Daily Telegram reports; Marriage is an institution under intense scrutiny, but the venerable tradition has received some good news in Lenawee County.

The number of divorces granted in Lenawee County last year declined by 7 percent from the year before while the number of marriage license applications went up 2.5 percent, according to statistics kept by the Lenawee County Clerk's office. Read full details
